Marines find no problem with finance

Contrast was the name of the game at Butler Stadium on Nov. 5, 2013, as the M&RA Black Ops team faced H&S Finance during a mid-season intramural flag football game and won 50-0.

Everything about the game was a stark contrast, from the black and white jerseys clashing on the field, to the 9-0, 0-9 standings of the teams.

“The fact that they’re undefeated and we haven’t even come close to winning a game yet, makes me believe tonight’s game will be a blowout,” said Christopher Altis, Finance coach. “Our goals are to score, have fun and avoid injuries.”

Although from the start, everyone present seemed to anticipate their loss, Finance jogged onto the field with a playful, lighthearted attitude that carried their determination into a duel against an intimidating opponent.

“If we don’t have our defense, we are not going to reach our goal of 40 points,” said Sgt. Joe Randall, Black Ops coach. “The one thing I want to take away is cohesiveness.”

The first 20-minute half came and went with the greatest highlights for Finance being first downs, but that didn’t hinder their spirit. They continued to fight, passing, running and even running trick plays, to no avail.

In fulfillment of Altis’ prophecy, the Black Ops team − comprised entirely of Marines, save two civilians − beat their opponent 50-0.

“Usually after a break week, we play so-so,” said Randall. “We should be enclosing our opponents well now, being it’s mid-season and all.”

The teams are part of the Quantico intramural flag football league, comprised of 18 teams and divided into the “National and American Leagues,” playing from mid-September through November.

Games begin at 6 p.m., at Butler Stadium; the National League plays on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the American League plays Mondays and Wednesdays.
