MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. -- The Quantico Middle/High School began baseball practice last week, but was confined to the school gymnasium due to the weather. Although the season is off to a cold, wet start, the team is hoping for a successful run.
“We have a good core group of guys this year,” said Paul Roy, the head coach for Warrior baseball. “Several of the players have played here for a few years and have done well for us.”
The team has seen some good and bad seasons. Last year they won a little more than half their games.
“We’ve had teams that have not done so well, and we’ve had teams that go on to win championships,” said Roy. “You never know what the season is going to hold.”
The schedule for this season has not been released yet, but Roy says there will only be a dozen or so games total.
“Our district is small,” said Roy. “It’s made up of small private schools and teams of home-school kids.”
The whole season will be away games due to there not being a baseball field on Marine Corps Base Quantico.
“We practice on the outfield of the softball field,” said Roy. “The only time these kids see an actual baseball field is during games.”
The team used to have a field right in front of the high school but the land was appropriated to build the new elementary school. Once the school is built, the old elementary school buildings will be torn down and a new middle/high school will be erected.
When all that is said and done, the land that the current high school sits on will be leveled and a football and baseball field will be laid out.
In the meantime, the Warriors of Quantico Middle High School will do what they can with what they have.
