QUANTICO MARINE CORPS BASE, Va. -- Marines stationed aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico had their work ahead of them as they challenged hundreds of students to a Tug-of-War during the 13th annual D.A.R.E. day presented by Stafford County Public Schools at Pratt Park in Fredericksburg, on June 10.
D.A.R.E. Day, which stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education Day, is held each spring at Pratt Park and has grown to reach 17 elementary schools in Stafford County. This year, according to Stafford County Police officials, more 2,000 children will benefit from the time and energy spent by various groups that volunteer to participate in the event.
“I try to volunteer as often as I can,” said Sgt. James Fortune III, military police officer, Marine Helicopter Squadron One. “One of my favorite quotes is by Jackie Robinson is that ‘A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.’ So, anytime I get a chance to work with people, especially children, I try to make that positive impact.”
The mission of D.A.R.E. Day is to provide all fifth-grade students of Stafford County who have completed the requirements of the D.A.R.E. program an opportunity to interact with accomplished people whose good choices have helped them to become and stay successful in their careers or hobbies, while working to make their community a better place. It is also an opportunity for children to find a healthy alternative to drugs and violence.
“Prior to coming to Quantico, I was a part of this event for almost 10 years,” said Rebecca Childress, Prevention and Education Specialist, Family Advocacy Program. “So, I knew this was an event in the community where we could reach a lot of people and really showcase Quantico Marines.
“The Marines being out here volunteering their personal time shows the community the opportunities that are open to the Marines serving on active duty she said. It also gives the community the opportunity to engage in fun activities with the best of the best.”
