Children soccer registration

24 Jul 2013 | Lance Cpl. Cuong Le Marine Corps Base Quantico

Registration for the Co-Ed Youth Soccer League opened at the Marine Corps Exchange aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico on July 20, 2013.

Sign-up is open to the children of active duty and retired service members or Department of Defense civilian.

There are two places where parents can sign their children up for soccer from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 20 and Aug. 3 and 4 at the Marine Corps Exchange or 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on July 29 and Aug. 2, 5 and 9 at the Youth Sports Office at the Barber Physical Activity Center.

The soccer league is looking for volunteer coaches who are willing to help teach and coach the kids on how to play the game.

“If the child has played a sport on base before then birth certificates and [Identification] cards will not need to be provided[to register],” said Joshua Wild, youth sports representative, Barber Physical Activity Center.

Games will be held every Saturday while practice will be held throughout the week. He said.

“Jerseys will be provided to all of the kids that sign up for the game,” said Wild.

Some people play soccer to compete, while others play it for fun, but for Steven, 5, soccer is a way to insert himself into a new community.

Even though Steven is 5 he has moved around more than some people have as a child.

“He wanted to play baseball, but we missed it so we are going to sign up for soccer and do baseball next year.  I am sure he will enjoy it when he starts playing, said Samantha Pereda, Steven’s mother. I just wanted to get him outside and playing a sport,”

Due to the lack of fields, league organizers do not yet have a permanent home for the first game, stated by Wild.
