Contractors began laying a sand cap off the shore of Marine Corps Base Quantico in the embayment near Chopawamsic Island on June 10, 2013. The sediment is being hydraulically pumped from barges to cover DDT contamination in the Potomac riverbed that resulted from a mid-1980s fire at a pesticide storage building. A barge carrying the equipment to unload the sand arrived June 4, and the first vessel carrying sand arrived June 6. Barges will travel back and forth between Quantico and Pocomoke City, Md., on the Eastern Shore, each bringing about 2,500 tons of sand, for the next three to four weeks. The project is being carried out by a joint venture between AGVIQ Environmental Services and CH2M Hill Constructors Inc. and paid for through the Navy Environmental Restoration Program. - Contractors began laying a sand cap off the shore of Marine Corps Base Quantico in the embayment near Chopawamsic Island on June 10, 2013.
