Guardian angel: Reservist applies military training to save life

She jumped into action without hesitation.

On a day that seemed like any other day while Senior Airman Nadia Snider, 916th Security Forces Squadron, was Christmas shopping, she saved a life.

As Airman Snider was preparing to leave a department store at Cross Creek Mall in Fayetteville, she noticed some store employees panicking. As Airman Snider walked closer to the employees she saw why they were anxious, there was a woman on the floor having convulsions.

Immediately, Airman Snider dropped her bags and while staying calm walked over to the woman to administer self aid and buddy care. Airman Snider said she could see the lady was having a seizure and knew that she had to protect the woman's head from hitting the floor and possibly sustaining further injuries.

" I directed one person to hold the lady's feet and another person to hold her arms," she said. "I then placed a rolled up jacket under the woman's head for stability."

While doing all this Airman Snider also called 9-1-1 to make sure the paramedics were coming.

Once the patient's convulsions stopped Airman Snider looked into the woman's purse hoping to find some identification, and came across the lady's check book with her name on it.

"I asked the lady her name checking for responsiveness," she said.

Another bystander attempted to offer the woman a drink and Airman Snider remembered from self aid and buddy care that the victim should not consume liquids just in case they may be in shock. She then informed the bystander that giving the victim liquid would not be a good idea.

"I then took the number off one of the checks and called the lady's husband to inform him of what happened," she said.

Airman Snider said before she left her side the lady grabbed her hand and said thank you.

Once the paramedics arrived, like Superman, Airman Snider left the scene. When asking Airman Snider if she ever called the woman  to check and see how she was doing she said she thought about it, but to this day has not done so.

Airman Snider knew her military training prepared her for a situation like this.

"It works to pay attention because you never know when it is going to come in handy, even the online computer based training has a lot of helpful information," she said.  "You have to want to learn the information the military is giving you."
