MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. -- The Marine Corps Marathon is inviting all who work or live aboard the base to grab their sneakers and participate in a two-mile walk and three-mile run Sept. 19 for National Run/Walk at Work Day. The free event will start from 11 a.m. on the track Butler Stadium and end at 1 p.m. Registration is not required and children are welcomed.
The MCM event will be held in conjunction with the Road Runners Club of America’s 9th annual "Run at Work Day" campaign. Sandra Osborn-Peters, communications coordinator at MCM said, since the marathon staff already partners with RRCA, as they certify most the marathon’s events, this campaign offers a ideal occasion to promote some of the MCM’s goals.
"Part of the Marine Corps Marathon mission is to promote physical fitness and this event is just a really good opportunity to get that message out there, bring people together and give them another [occasion] to be physically fit and move," Osborn-Peters said. "We want to also promote community goodwill, so we’re hoping to bring out every member of the base community together in one place."
MCM staff will give free T-Shirts to participants and a $ 5 discount off the Turkey Trot race on Nov. 22.
The race route will loop around the track and then down John Quick Road. Runners will proceed in the opposite direction of walkers. The event will include music, the MCM arch at finish line and water for participants.
This is the first run/walk event at Quantico and Kristina Jones, sponsorship coordinator at MCM, who helped organize it said, the success this year will determine whether MCM will make it an annual event.
