The Quantico Middle/High School Warriors baseball team played the Holy Family Academy Vendeens, from Manassas, on April 9, 2014, at George Hellwig Memorial Park in Manassas. The Warriors held back the Vendeens for the most of the game, but couldn’t stop a rally in the last inning, losing 11-10.

At the top of the first inning, it seemed like the Warriors weren’t holding anything back, scoring three runs without an out and two more before the inning was over. The Vendeens finally got off the field with a strike out, but their luck wouldn’t change much on offense.

Treyton, a junior for the Warriors, took the mound at the bottom of the first and wouldn’t be relieved until the sixth inning. He had a decent game, striking out nine players and only allowing five base hits.

The only problem he had was giving up five walks, three of which ended up scoring.

“He looked good up there for most of the game,” said Paul Roy, the head coach for the Warriors. “He held them off for the most part. We’ll see if he can do more in the future.”

At the bottom of the sixth inning, Alec, a senior for Quantico, took over for Treyton, and seemed like he would have no trouble finishing the game with a win. He struck out his first batter and the next two hit an easy pop-fly and a ground ball that led to an easy throw-out at first. But the next inning would be the downfall of the Warriors.

After a round of poor hitting, the Warriors took the field for the bottom of the seventh inning, up by two runs and three outs away from the win. Alec walked three players before a Vendeen hit a double, scoring two runs and tying the game. The Vendeens needed one more run to finish the game.

Alec tried to settle himself but the crack of the bat put everyone on edge as the ball went toward right field, where the outfielder missed the ball and allowed the final run to score and end the game.

“We need to work on our fielding,” said Roy. “[These guys need to learn to field hits like that so defense becomes routine, and they don’t need to think about it, they just do it.]”

The Warriors next game will be at Patriots Park in Fredericksburg, against St. Michael the Archangel High School at 4 p.m.
