MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. -- In accordance with a memo from the commandant, a few changes will soon be made to the sale of alcohol on Marine Corps Base Quantico.
Most notably, hard liquor will be pulled from the shelves of the Marine Mart at The Basic School, as the memo, sent to the director of the Semper Fit and Exchange Services Division on Aug. 26, 2013, directs that distilled spirits are to be removed from all Marine Marts adjacent to barracks.
Bryan Driver, spokesman for Semper Fit and Exchange Services, said the TBS shop appears to be the only Quantico facility that will be affected by that guidance, as it’s the only one that sells liquor and is located near a barracks.
Others, however, will have more restrictive hours for alcohol sales. The memo dictates that alcohol of any kind will only be sold at Marine Corps Exchange facilities between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. This would not affect the Main Exchange, for example, which isn’t open outside those hours, but several outlets, such as the Package Store and the Marine Marts on mainside and at TBS, open earlier and will have to hold off on alcohol sales in the early morning.
Driver said it does not appear that Quantico exchange facilities will be affected by another directive in the memo, restricting floor space dedicated to alcohol sales and displays to 10 percent of total floor space, other than in package stores or in exchanges that include package stores. Alcoholic beverages, displays and marketing are to be consolidated away from the main entrance.
In his memo, Gen. James F. Amos cited support for the secretary of the Navy’s 21st Century Sailor and Marine initiative, which is aimed at maximizing personal readiness, as well as Marine Corps behavioral health, wellness and sexual assault prevention initiatives, among the reasons for curtailing alcohol sales aboard installations.
All changes are to be made within 90 days from the date of the letter.
Driver said signs will be posted at all facilities that will be affected.
