WWII ‘Forgotten Battalion’ comes to Quantico for their last reunion

Arnold Meads, 96, has carried a suitcase of memorabilia from his years of service in the “Forgotten Battalion,” of the 3rd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment and the 2nd 155mm Howitzer Battalion. Meads and four other members of the battalion—Mike Arrand, Rolland “Pat” Patrick, Jim Lieberknecht and Earl Lance—held what will most likely be their final reunion aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico Aug. 25-29.

The youngest veteran was 89, and the group lost 10 members in the last year. The veterans toured the Marine Corps Museum and Raider Hall and gathered together for several meals, including a closing banquet attended by the Col. David Edson, grandson of their first commanding officer, then-Col. Edson’s Raiders hold final reunion, toast brothers in arms

They were men who answered the call when our nation was in desperate need and whose tenacity turned the tide in the Pacific,” said Col. David Edson, branch head for Reserve Affairs Policy and grandson of Maj. Gen. Merritt “Red Mike” Edson. Then-Lt. Col. Merritt Edson took command of 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment on June 7, 1941. The unit was redesignated as “1st Marine Raider Battalion” on February 16, 1942. Edson was promoted to colonel en route to the Pacific and led his men in battle on Tulagi and Guadalcanal.

Museum’s Vietnam focus

Isaac Both didn’t know all that much about the Vietnam War, so he attended Friday’s “Vietnam History Day” festivities at the National Museum of the Marine Corps to learn more about the conflict from those who were actually there. The 19-year-old Germanna Community College student came away impressed after touring the museum’s Vietnam War gallery and taking in an informative lecture by retired Marine Corps Maj. Bill Peters.

Wounded Warriors’ ‘reverse career fair’ brings employers to potential employees

Quantico’s Wounded Warrior Regiment staff, working in conjunction with personnel from Army Wounded Warriors and Naval Sea Systems Command, hosted a reverse career fair for wounded warriors in the National Capital Region. A reverse career fair is one where the jobseekers are seated at tables with name cards, and the employers — who have received a book of the jobseekers’ resumes in advance — walk around and approach those in whom they are interested.

World War II vets headed back to Iwo Jima, Young Marines make it possible

Medal of Honor recipient Herschel “Woody” Williams will be among the 15 World War II veterans headed back to Iwo Jima next month, and he has the Young Marines to thank for it. The veterans will be among those making the Iwo Jima Association of America’s “Reunion of Honor” trip next month. The weeklong trip, which will also include a stop in Guam, will take the aging warriors and several of their family members back to the site of some of the fiercest combat of the entire Pacific Theater.
