Central Intelligence Agency seeks transitioning Marines

The Transition Readiness Seminar hosted a Central Intelligence Agency information session for transitioning Marines and civilians aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico on May 3, 2013.

Agency representatives briefed about 50 participants on job opportunities with the National Clandestine Service, which serves as the covert arm of the CIA, collecting human source intelligence internationally.

The information session gave service members an opportunity to meet and greet CIA representatives, an event, Demetria Thomas, career resource program manager for the Transition Readiness Seminar, hopes will translate into employment.

“We’re trying to prepare our Marines with every option possible to transition smoothly into the civilian workforce,” Thomas said.

For separating Marines with prior deployment and education experience, shifting to a career in the intelligence community can be fluid transition. Candidates who have prior military, international and educational experience are very desirable, Agency representatives said.

Contrary to the “boots on the ground,” field depiction of all CIA agents that’s often displayed in Hollywood movies, agency representatives said the CIA offers a wide range of job opportunities, many of which are in the Washington Metro Area.

Positions such as a staff operations officer, specialized skills officer, operational targeting officer, language officer and paramilitary operations officer are all jobs that are Washington, D.C- based.

Akin to the Marine Corps, the CIA is a mission-driven agency that relies on their members to function as one unit.

“There’s no right way or wrong way; its one team, one fight, a CIA representative said. “It’s a machine and everybody has a role.”

However, instead of honing warfighting skills, agents learn to develop tactics that help collect foreign intelligence, not openly attainable otherwise. Agency representatives urged military members to apply by visiting, www.cia.gov and consider continuing their service to the United States.
