On July fourth 2015, we commemorate the 239th anniversary of our Declaration of Independence, celebrating our continued independence and freedom as a nation. Drafted by Thomas Jefferson in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was written in order for America's 13 original colonies to declare their independence from Great Britain. Our great nation has celebrated the Independence Day since the Revolutionary War, but it was formally declared a national holiday in 1941.

O you who have believed! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may (learn) self-restraint (Qur’an 2:183). Ramadan or Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is the ninth month of Islamic calendar and obligatory for every able-bodied, Muslim of age except those who are sick, travelling, pregnant or women going through menstruation. Ramadan began this year in the USA on June 18 and expected to end on July 16 followed by the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr or festivity of breaking the Fast on July 17.

The annual Graduation Celebration will be held July 16 at the Clubs at Quantico. Each year the Voluntary Education Center (VEC) aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico (MCBQ) hosts a consolidated college "Graduation Celebration". The celebration honors the 2014-2015 MCBQ college graduates and the family members who support them. The celebration is open to all 2014-2015 MCBQ college graduates and those within 6 credits of graduation to include Marines, Sailors, family members, DoD employees and veterans who have earned their associates, bachelor, masters and doctoral degrees

Prayer and play retreat offered for Men

The Catholic community aboard Quantico is offering free admission for any active duty military for a Pray and Play weekend retreat to be held in nearby Prince William Forest Park, cabin compound 4. Married men may bring their sons if they are 12 or older. The retreat runs from 5 p.m. on July 9 to noon on July 12.

Summer reading program kicks off at base library, prizes available

The summer reading program kicked off at the Marine Corps Base Quantico base library on Monday with a special story hour for young children and their parents. The theme for this year’s program is “Read to the Rhythm,” and according to head librarian Richard Freeman, the program is the same at all military base libraries throughout the Department of Defense. “It helps maintain continuity during the summer transition,” said Freeman

Quantico Middle/High School students participate in summer STEM camp

Rising sixth, seventh, and eighth graders at Quantico Middle/High School had the unique opportunity to attend a science, technology, engineering, and math camp at the school from June 15-19 free of charge. According to Thomas Carroll, an engineer with Marine Corps Systems Command, approximately 55 students attended, and they were supported by “18 engineers from MCSC, 17 teachers from QMHS, two representatives from the College of William and Mary and student volunteers from QMHS.”

Volunteers keep the 2015 DoD Warrior Games running smoothly

The 2015 DoD Warrior Games are a major logistical undertaking that has required the assistance of hundreds of volunteers from both the base and off-base communities. According to Gerta Bledsoe, the volunteer coordinator for the Games, as of Tuesday there were more than 900 registered volunteers, and, “people are asking all the time if they can still help out. We’ll probably have over 1,000 by the end.”
