The purpose of the exercise is to test individual candidates on their ability to not only lead, but to motivate and confidently accomplish the mission with their unit while in a chaotic environment.

The evaluation tests the candidates' physical, mental and, most importantly, leadership skills necessary and required of all Marine officers before they are commissioned as second lieutenants.
The northern long-eared bat, Myotis septentrionalis, was listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Given that the bat is known to reside in Virginia, the Department of Defense directed Marine Corps Base Quantico to conduct surveys for the presence of the bat aboard the base.
The northern long-eared bat is a medium-sized bat with a body length of 3 to 3.7 inches, but a wingspan of 9 to 10 inches. It is listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
