Safe surveying and clearing of former ranges is a necessary part of the land use and the land development process aboard MCB Quantico. Last fall, surveys with metal detectors identified metallic objects below the surface, which were digitally mapped for future investigation. The current survey will determine if the metal objects are just metal objects or if munitions are present. In addition, any specific land areas affected by munitions will be mapped. Information collected during the survey will determine whether or not future munitions clearance efforts are warranted. The work will be conducted by trained unexploded ordnance technicians and will follow Department of the Navy explosive safety regulations.
