World War II veteran, retired U.S. Marine Corps Maj. John Elliott lays a memorial wreath at the WWII memorial site on 70th Anniversary of the end of WWII at the Quantico National Cemetery, Aug. 16. The event proclamation from the Prince William Board of County Supervisors read: The WWII generation created an array of organizations which helped to strengthen the American democracy by promoting civic engagement, volunteerism, and service to the community. The U.S. Marine Corps Rifle Team is awarded the 2015 National Trophy Infantry Team Match at Camp Perrin in Port Clinton, Ohio. The eight-man team includes six instructor-competitors: Staff Sgt. Chad Ranton, USMC Shooting Team, Sgt. Tanner Bauer, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121 avionics technical, Sgt Antonio Diconza, USMC Shooting Team, Sgt. Joseph Peterson, Weapons Training Bn., Sgt. Joseph Dukich, USMC Shooting Team, Sgt. Jeremy Benjamin, USMC Shooting Team, Rifle Team coach Staff Sgt. Mark Altendorf, and Rifle Team officer in charge Capt. Major General Ben Hebard Fuller, 15th Commandant of the Marine Corps, was born in Big Rapids, Michigan, on 27 February 1870. He was appointed to the Naval Academy from that state 23 May 1885, and upon graduation, was transferred to the Marine Corps and appointed a second lieutenant 1 July 1891. He, with six other members of his class, attended the first course for new Marine officers at the School of Application, which was the prototype for today's Basic School. He was promoted first lieutenant, 16 March 1893; captain, 3 March 1899; major, 27 December 1903; lieutenant colonel, 3 February 1911; colonel, 29 August 1916; brigadier general (temporary), 1 July 1918; and brigadier general 8 February 1924.
