Communication is key at Scout Sniper Course

The call came in without warning, alerting the forward communications team at the Sniper Control Center that one of the three operational Marine Scout Sniper teams in the field had been compromised. It was part of a training exercise to conclude the Scout Sniper Unit Leaders Course, but the four Marines braving the chilly Jan. 28 temperatures from the roof of a makeshift three-story building in the training area in the remote west side training area of Marine Corps Base Quantico wasted no time in relaying critical information back to the Surveillance and Reconnaissance Center. A second lieutenant serving as the sniper platoon commander was awaiting further instructions from battalion higher-ups.

Beginning Saturday, Marines will find it easier to get around base on the weekends, thanks to a new shuttle service run by the Single Marine Program. The shuttle service was inspired by the desire of base commander Col. David W. Maxwell to meet the needs of Marines on the west side of base, particularly those who are not authorized to keep vehicles on base.

Quantico Income Tax Center to open for business

Tax season is here, and the Quantico Income Tax Center will soon be up and ready to provide any assistance to service members, dependents and retirees in need. The center is tentatively scheduled to open Jan. 28, with walk-in services available until April 15. Services for those filing after April 15 will be by appointment only. All returns will be prepared on a first-come, first-served basis, although active duty personnel in uniform will receive priority during normal business hours.

Danger at the intersection of ‘Walk’ and ‘Don’t Walk’

On Friday, at approximately 7 a.m., a Marine on foot in a crosswalk adjacent to Barber Physical Activity Center was struck by a vehicle. As of Monday afternoon, the Marine was still hospitalized but out of danger, according to Mark Knox, director of Base Safety. Of the location where the incident took place, Knox said, “the paint indicating the crosswalk was extremely faded, and there was poor lighting.”
