Robert M. Patterson, a retired U.S. Army Command Sergeant Major, Vietnam veteran, and a Medal of Honor recipient, poses for a photo during his visit to Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, Jan. 23, 2025. On May 6, 1968, Patterson single-handedly destroyed five enemy bunkers by rifle and grenade fire, killing eight enemy soldiers, and captured seven weapons. His dauntless courage and heroism inspired his platoon to resume the attack and to penetrate the enemy defensive position. Patterson was awarded the distinguished Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the Vietnam war. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Braydon Rogers)
