U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Rebekka S. Heite/Released 120111-M-NB885-067.JPG
Feb 21, 2013
Last year, in honor of the 67th Annicersary of the flag raising over Iwo Jima, Marines stationed aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, Japan, trekked 3 miles to the top of the 550-foot extinct volcano known as Mount Surabachi. Today the United States Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington stands as a reminder to all who see it of the sacrifices made in that fateful battle that lasted from Feb. 19 to March 26, 1945. Nearly 20,000 Marines and sailors were wounded and almost 7,000 killed during the monthlong battle.
