MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. — Headquarters and Service Battalion holds a Marine Corps’ Birthday 5K battalion run Nov. 6 aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico. Col. Todd Oneto, commanding officer, and Sgt. Maj. Thomas Johnson, senior enlisted advisor, lead hundreds of Marines, who chanted classic military cadences in unison. Following the run, Oneto recognized the most motivated Marine, while Johnson encouraged the support of the annual Toys for Tots program. Marines who participate in the run have the opportunity to give unwrapped toys for this year’s donation. The Marine Corps Reserve founded this program in 1947 in Los Angeles, Calif. and has collected more than 500 million toys for distribution throughout the years.

The panel and presentation are part of the Case Method Project at Marine Corps University. Staff members from the project use historical operations and battles to teach decision making at all the courses conducted by the Marine Corps University.

Sergeant Major Gerald Saunders, MCINCR - MCB Quantico sergeant major, thanks Fannie Black, the widow of Sgt. Maj. Henry Holstead Black during a wreath laying ceremony Nov. 10 at Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, Va. Sergeant Major Black served as the seventh Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps from 1975 to 1977. During his career Black served as a drill instructor, recruiter and infantryman. His was deployed to the Dominican Republic, and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. His success in the aforementioned duties warranted the Bronze Star with valor device and two award stars, Purple Heart and Combat Action Ribbon

Dan Malcolm’s death, Kutilek, a student at Command and Staff College, will embark on a 200-mile bike ride around Marine Corps Base Quantico to honor his friend by raising money for the Semper Fi Fund, which provides financial and emotional support for injured or ill service members
