Quantico’s Vacation Bible School was a huge success this year thanks to overwhelming support from base organizations and the community, said Loren Crone, organizer and chaplain at Marine Corps Embassy Security Group aboard the base.

The school, which took place at the Marine Memorial Chapel and Religious Annex, doubled in volunteers this year, with 30 civilians and 10 Marines from MCESG. With around 141 children attending, Crone said they also saw a one-third increase in participation over last year.

"Inspector D3" was the theme during the weeklong camp that went from Aug. 4-8. Children in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade, trained as special agents learning to "Discover, Decide and Defend." The goal was to teach practical investigative skills, helping children analyze information comprehensively. Each day a different organization demonstrated their role in the community and how they accomplish their job. Organizations included the Marine Corps Base Quantico Fire Department, the Provost Marshal’s Office with their K9s, and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. The hope was that children would use the same investigative skills that were demonstrated, during their daily biblical lesson.

"We don’t want to just tell the kids what to believe," Crone said. "[Rather,] we would prefer to give them the tools needed to examine stories in the bible and think critically about it."

Additionally, children enjoyed crafts and outdoor games, including an obstacle course and a laser activity.

Crone, who works under the base chaplain command, said VBS is more than a religious event, but a way to bring the community together. He said it’s a goal that aligns with the commander’s vision.

"Since Col. [David] Maxwell, [commander at Marine Corps Base Quantico], arrived here his whole mantra has been community-building," Crone said. "Not all of our volunteers are religious, but it’s a great way to come together as a community."
