Flanked by United States Marines along a spectacular finish line, Groundpounder retired Col. Al Richmond completed his 41st consecutive Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday. Richmond, a longtime resident of Arlington, Virginia, home of the 41st MCM, ran “The People’s Marathon” wearing bib #41 in 6:39:47.

Compete against the Army in blood donor challenge

Donors from all over the Washington metro area will save lives during the sixth annual Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP) Army-Navy Blood Donor Challenge, which will run Nov. 3 through Dec. 6. This year, the ASBP will conduct 12 blood drives in Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia over the course of the challenge. All blood collected will directly support ill or injured service members and their families worldwide.

Two groundpounders get ready for their 41st consecutive Marine Corps Marathon

One simple word can be used to describe Will Brown and Al Richmond, who have run the Marine Corps Marathon every year since its inception 40 years ago – groundpounders. This is the moniker given these two retired Marines (and other runners), who keep coming back to the start line in Arlington year after year to essentially pound the pavement for 26.2 miles through the streets of downtown D.C.

MCAF tightens security on the Potomac with buoys marking restricted areas

In 2010, Marine Corps Air Facility (MCAF) Quantico contracted for the installation of 36 buoys 500 meters out from the facility in the Potomac River, designating those waters as restricted. The intrusion of a fishing boat in January of that year into waters adjacent to MCAF—which houses HMX-1, the helicopter squadron responsible for helicopter transport support to the U.S. president, vice president, Cabinet members, and other VIPs—opened more eyes to the facility’s vulnerability to threat from the river.

Civilian Marines Learn the Ins and Outs of the Serving the Corps

The two-day MCAP, which was introduced in December of 2007, is meant to educate civilian employees on the history, culture, and organizational structure of the Marine Corps. The hope is that attending the course will leave civilians feeling part of the team and understanding what it means to work for the Corps.
