Twice a year the heating and cooling systems are powered down then powered up in preparation for the next season. There are times during the switchover when buildings will be too warm or too cool for some occupants versus the outside temperatures. The complex process extends to approximately 70 buildings aboard the base. Not each building on base will be affected; essentially older buildings will require the switchover. The discontinued use of cooling operations for Fall 2015 is slated for Oct. 1. The 30-day systematic shutdown is contingent on local weather conditions, and will prepare the base to launch heating systems Nov. 15. “Barracks, mess halls, and administrative building are given priority – in that order,” said Joseph D. Provenzano III, Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff. Energy consumption is considered when preparing for a switchover. Saving energy and natural gas usage equates thousands of dollars saved on base. Each year while managing the switchover, Provenzano helps to maneuver the balance between intelligent energy consumption along with comfortable living and working spaces on base. Although the gap is a great time for savings, the opportunity is dependent on weather conditions. “With mild weather, we hope to save money by allowing a period of time with no energy or gas usage,” said Provenzano. “Our team will use a proper timeline to take advantage of prolonging the reboot of systems between seasons.” Post organizations which work in support these efforts include the Public Works Branch and Facilities Maintenance Section. Facilities in need of unique accommodations should submit the NAVFAC 9-11014/20 work request form to the Facilities Maintenance Section.
