Labor Day guidance, safety messag 3 Sep 2015 | Col. J. M. Murray; Marine Corps Base Quantico Commander Marine Corps Base Quantico PRINT SHARE Marine Corps Base Quantico -- On Sept. 7, 2015, we will celebrate Labor Day, a national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Labor Day can be traced back to 1887 when the state of Oregon passed into law the celebration of Labor Day. Later that year Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York followed Oregon’s lead and through legislative enactment also passed into law the Labor Day holiday.Celebrated the first Monday of September, Labor Day unofficially marks the end of summer and the beginning of the back-to-School season. During this holiday weekend Americans across the country will engage in their last big summer celebration by participating in Bar-B-Qs and attending local events such as parades and fireworks. I hope everyone takes some time to relax and enjoy the festivities with safety on our minds.Let’s ensure that while celebrating the Esprit-de-Corps of the American worker we remain always faithful by making safety the cornerstone of our decision making abilities. The continued success of the Marine Corps will always depend on its greatest asset which is each and every one of you. I look forward to seeing everyone back after Labor Day weekend safe and revived.I expect all commanders, directors, commissioned and noncommissioned officers, and leaders at all levels to conduct thorough pre-holiday safety briefings prior to the holiday weekend. Engaging with our Marines and leading weekend safety discussions will strengthen our leadership as well as promote a conducive learning environment that supports healthy behavior practices that save lives. Our achievable goal will continue to be no accidents or incidents, no acts of misconduct, and no loss of life. I am confident that we will take care of one another and ensure every Marine, Sailor and civilian Marine remains in the fight. Enjoy the time with your loved ones; be safe, and stay Semper Fidelis.
