A number of key construction projects will take place aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico this summer.

Drivers, be aware. Two road projects include culvert and road repair of MCB-2 and road repaving along Julian Drive. Harry Lee Hall will get a face lift with window replacements and patio repairs. In the Weapon’s Training Battalion area, a new mess hall is being constructed and an Embassy Security Group Facility administration and armory structure will be built.

Julian Drive

Julian Drive, located on Mainside, behind the 7-day store, and running parallel to the railroad tracks, will close to receive a new coat of asphalt during two phases this summer. “The entire length of (the road) is in bad shape,” said Joe Provenzano, deputy assistant chief of staff for the Installation & Environment Division.

First, contractors will dig up the road and repair the storm drain system, and then work on curbs and repaving the entire road.

Phase one will begin on July 13 and end around Aug. 14. Buildings affected by this road closure include the 7-day store, Goodyear Tire & Auto, the family housing office and Mann Hall. The second phase is scheduled to begin on Aug. 17 and end around Sept. 25. Buildings affected by this road closure include Mann Hall office, Quantico Fire and Emergency Services, the Consolidated Substance Abuse Counseling Center, and other surrounding buildings.

MCB-2 Closure

Vehicles using the Onville Road gate will be filtered through The Basic School via Montezuma Ave. as an alternate route. Two alternate routes, MCB-1 and MCB-3, may be used.

“Traffic through The Basic School will move slower of course because there are stop signs along Montezuma Ave.,” said Provenzano. “I don’t foresee [traffic] backing up onto the state roads or 95.”

Barricades will be erected at the intersections of MCB-2 and MCB-4, and MCB-2 and MCB-3.

Access will be provided for personnel who need to access the Explosive Ordnance Disposal area, Property Control Office and Charlie Demo Range.

There is no exact date for the road closure at this time, but information will be available soon.

“We will not close that off until the contractor is absolutely ready to start,” said Provenzano.

Editor's note: Due to unforeseen circumstances the repair of MCB-2 has been delayed until Spring 2016.

Harry Lee Hall

On Mainside, Harry Lee Hall, building 17, will receive substantial window replacements and patio repairs.

Designated an historic building by the National Historic Register, Harry Lee Hall was built in 1935 from stones the 10th Marine Regiment cut from a nearby quarry.

Repairs include removal of existing historic wood windows and exterior doors and replacement with aluminum blast-proof windows, keeping the size configurations and profiles of the existing windows.

Other renovations include repainting walls and repair and replacement of water-damaged plaster and woodwork. The exterior brick, stone, mortar and roof repair and limited lintel (a beam supporting masonry in a wall) cleaning.

Patio repairs include demolition and replacement of rear concrete patio and stairs, brick planters and tile.

This project has a projected completion date of July 31.

Weapons Training Battalion Mess Hall

A new 16,620 square foot dining facility is being built to support the Weapons Training Battalion and Marine Corps Embassy Security Group at the at the C.A. Lloyd Range Area.

The one-story building will include a metal roof, brick veneer and stone accents. The mess hall will accommodate up to 562 people and feature indoor and outdoor seating areas as well as a drive-through window for food to go.

The project also includes additional parking and the demolition of the existing dining facility. The project is projected to be completed Oct. 2015.

Embassy Security Group Facilities

A two-story administrative and armory building will be constructed and a new wastewater force main and two pump stations will be installed along 3 miles of the Application Trail.  The new building will house classrooms and other facilities to train Marines in similar settings to where they will be posted.

This is the third and final phase of the construction project, estimated to be completed fall 2015.
