Flu season is here, vaccines are in

It’s flu season. Are you ready? According to the Center for Disease Control each year in the United States an estimated 5 to 20 percent of the population can be infected with the flu and more than 200,000 people may be hospitalized during the flu season. New flu cases are already being reported through local news channels.

Naval Health Clinic Quantico and its Branch Health Clinics are offering seasonal influenza vaccinations for all active duty military members, TRICARE beneficiaries, Department of Defense civilians where influenza vaccination is written in their position description as a condition of employment, DOD civilians and contractors specifically required to be immunized for continuity of operations, reservists, and foreign military members.

Active duty unit representatives can contact their respective influenza coordinators (phone numbers listed below) to set up a visit from a mobile vaccinations team to conduct influenza vaccination exercises for their active duty military personnel. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for unit commanders to meet the 90 percent objective for active duty by early December. By coordinating vaccination evolutions at work centers we help limit the loss of manpower, increase medical readiness, and ensure the health protection of our population.

TBS personnel can visit the TBS Clinic between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. WNY BHC and SG BHC personnel can visit these clinics from 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. All other DOD civilians requesting vaccination at the clinic will be required to complete a DD Form 2569, Other Health Insurance or present OHI card before receiving immunization. Flu vaccines may be received at no cost from any TRICARE-authorized provider or at one of the TRICARE retail network pharmacies. For information, visit www.express-scripts.com/TRICARE/pharmacy. Active duty members who use this TRICARE benefit to receive their flu immunization must provide documentation to the influenza coordinator for their respective clinic for entry into the Military Readiness Reporting System.

Anyone receiving a flu vaccination will be required to fill out a medical history form and be prescreened before the vaccine is given. Patients will receive the intranasal vaccine unless their particular medical needs indicate the requirement for the injectable vaccine.
