Hunting season in full swing

14 Oct 2014 | John Hollis Marine Corps Base Quantico

Limited deer season is already underway at Marine Corps Base Quantico, but it’s hardly the only game available right now.

But Game Wardens have a message for hunters who plan to come aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico in search of game.

“Always keep safety in mind and know the rules and regulations.”

That starts with knowing the season for whatever game each hunter is seeking.

Hunters with bows have been free to seek out white-tailed deer, turkeys, black bears, bobcats, crows, doves for a limited period of time since Oct. 4. Bow hunters are permitted to hunt all season long, even through gun season.

White-tailed deer season will resume again for bow users from January 5-24, but only for antlerless deer on the base mainside archery area. Crow season began on Sept. 2 and extends until Jan. 24, but the birds can only be hunted on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, according to base regulations. Hunters with bows are free to seek out bobcats until Oct. 31, but are limited to just two per day.

Hunting seasons for ducks, geese and swans began on Sept. 2 and runs until Jan. 24. 2015. Dove season also began on Sept. 2, but closes on Oct. 31 before re-opening from Nov. 22-29 and Dec. 27-Jan. 15, 2015 with specific limits and times.

Hunters with firearms are free to target black bears from Nov. 24-Jan. 3, but the bears must weigh a minimum of 100 pounds live or 75 pounds dressed. Firearms are not permitted on the base mainside.

Deer season for hunters with firearms runs from Nov. 15-Jan. 3, but extends to bucks only, except for the designated either-sex days of Nov. 29, Dec. 20 and Dec. 27-Jan. 3. Deer hunting aboard MCBQ is limited to archery tackle, shotgun with a slug, or muzzleloading rifle greater than .45 caliber.

Turkey season for hunters with firearms runs from Oct. 25-Nov. 7 before opening again on Nov. 27, Dec. 1-27 and Jan. 10-24.

Other animals whose hunting seasons are either already under way or slated to soon start include foxes (Nov. 1-Jan. 24, no limit); opossums (Oct. 15-Jan. 24, no limit); raccoons (Oct. 15-Jan. 24, two per day); bobcats (Nov. 1-Jan. 24, maximum of two per day); rabbits (Nov. 1-Jan. 24, maximum of six per day); and squirrels (Sept. 6-Jan. 24, maximum of six per day).

To hunt aboard MCBQ, hunters must meet all licensing requirements, including applicable state and federal guidelines.

Per NREA regulations, all hunters aboard Quantico are required to check in with the Game Checking Station during normal operating hours to give officials all their pertinent information.

For information about the rules and regulations for hunting aboard MCBQ, check out http://www.quantico.marines.mil/OfficesStaff/GFInstallationandEnvironment/NaturalResourcesEnvironmentalAffairs/QuanticoSportsman/Hunting.aspx. Hunters may also contact the Quantico Game Check Station at 703-784-5523 or 703-784-5329. They may acquire a copy of the Virginia state regulations anywhere state licenses are sold.
