CFC Kicks off with a high-impact tournament

13 Sep 2013 | Cpl. Antwaun Jefferson Marine Corps Base Quantico

More than 100 Department of Defense civilians, military members and dependents attend the 2013 Quantico Combined Federal Campaign Kick-Off event at the Barber Physical Activity Center aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico on Friday.

Every year, the base helps with CFC efforts and their mission which, according to the CFC official website, is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all.

Kicking things off this year was an Ultimate Dodgeball Championship and an opportunity for people who attended to learn about the CFC. During this segment, representatives of a few organizations that are a part of the CFC talked about their charities and reminded people they were eager to answer any questions people might have.

Before the start of the championship, Capt. Tyvon Petway, Quantico’s CFC chairperson, gave the teams and fans a quick rundown of what was going to happen that morning. Following him, was Col. David Maxwell, base commander, who had a few words to say.

“Make sure to get your units engaged and inform them of the opportunity they have to donate,” Maxwell said. “Together we can make this year’s drive a successful one. Now, let’s have a great time and best of luck to you all in the competition.”

Eighteen teams participated and the teams that finished in first, second or third place received a plaque and a dodgeball championship t-shirt.

In third place, was the Ballstars. In second was team Not In The Face. The team that dominated was the Purple Cobras from the Marine Corps Air Facility.

“Coming in the game, we already knew we were going to win because of our unit cohesion, selfless team and esprit de corps,” said Jarrod Robinson, captain of the Purple Cobras. “We played each game as if it was our last and here we are.”
