Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va. -- For the first time, the Exceptional Family Member Program, in partnership with Special Olympics Virginia, will host the Special Olympics Fun Field Day Meet Sept. 7, 2013, at Butler Stadium aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
More than 75 athletes diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability, ranging from five-years-old to adulthood, are estimated to participate in the event. Marines from Headquarters and Service Battalion as well as civilian employees such as the Quantico Fire and Emergency Services will be volunteering or cheering on the athletes.
By providing Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, EFMP and Special Olympics Va., are giving the athletes continuous opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
