Cranky monkey comes to Quantico

Marine Corps Base Quantico has been the venue for many civilian-based events each year. This time, it was the location for EX2 Adventures’s seventh annual 12 Hours of Cranky Monkey Mountain Bike Relay Race, beginning and ending between the Child Development Center North and the John H. Russell Elementary School on June 22.

The race challenged solo racers and teams of two or three to complete as many 9.25-mile laps as possible in a 12-hour period, from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. A new 3-hour solo option was also implemented this year. This was meant for those not able to commit the time or training to compete in the full 12- hour race.

Nearly 300 racers showed up to compete in the event. Many of the racers were from the Maryland, Virginia or the District of Columbia, however, some actually traveled a great distance to be a part of the competition.

“I found out about this event two days ago while I was at home in Austin, Texas,” said Erik Warren, participant of the event. “I’m a health nut and really love to ride my bike. It’s mostly flat trails in Austin, so this will definitely be a new experience for me. Also, this gives me a chance to visit my step-mom in Virginia.”

Throughout the 9.25-mile course, there were twists and turns, log ramps, steep hills and long fireroads. The directors of the race stressed safety throughout the entire day. Helmets had to be worn when riding or a team’s time would be penalized. Aid stations were strategically positioned on the course, stocked with water, Gatorade, first aid kits and emergency communication systems.

In the end, the race went off flawlessly and the racers, though exhausted, came out of the trails and passed the finish line with looks of accomplishment on their faces.

“Everything went well,” said Tyler Wean, operations coordinator, for the Cranky Monkey event. “The event always has its participants laughing, getting along well and enjoying the great food that has been provided. Everyone loves the trails and we are thankful to the base for letting us hold our event here.”
