MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. -- Springs sports for the Quantico Middle/High School Warriors has started and the Lady Warriors’ Varsity Softball and Soccer teams were in action at the Field of Dreams and Butler Stadium on March 21, 2013.
In the softball team’s first game, they went head-to-head against the Faith Baptist High School Conquerors, out of Fredericksburg.
The Conquerors were throwing many high balls which resulted in continuous walks to first base, on loading the bases many times for the Lady Warriors. Two of the most exciting moments of the game were when a Conqueror player was caught in a run-down between third and home with Lady Warrior players closing in and eventually getting the out. The second was an inside-the-park home run with two Lady Warriors on base.
At the end of the game, the Lady Warriors easily defeated their opponents, 22-16.
“We have a young team and all I wanted them to do was concentrate on the fundamentals of baseball, try not to make too many errors,” said ret. Sgt. Maj. Jose Diaz, head coach, Lady Warriors. “And for the most part, that is exactly they did. They kept their head in the game, made some great outs, so I’m proud of them.”
The Lady Warriors’ Soccer Team had the same luck that day as they had no trouble defeating their opponents, Faith Baptist High School Conquerors, 4-0. The next day, the Lady Warriors planned to do the same thing to the Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy Patriots at Butler Stadium. The Patriots on the other hand, had something completely different in mind for the match.
Throughout the entire match, the Patriots made their presence felt. The Lady Warriors had the ability to clear ball and Missy, goalie for the Lady Warriors, managed to block many potential goals during breakaways and chip shots throughout the match. Unfortunately, the Patriots were also able to block counterattacks and put plenty of defensive pressure on each of the Lady Warriors’ attackers. By the end of the match, the Patriots defeated the Lady Warriors, 5-0.
“I expect 100 percent effort from my team,” said Ken Woodie, head coach, Lady Warriors. “No matter if the win or lose, I know that they have given me that effort, and that’s all I can ask.”
