UPDATE: New Telegraph Road closure date, Russell Road closed March 22-24 at night

14 Feb 2013 | Mike DiCicco Marine Corps Base Quantico

Beginning March 25, the Telegraph Road bridge over Interstate 95 will close down for approximately nine months while crews remove the existing bridge and construct a new one that will allow the coming high-occupancy toll lanes to pass under the bridge in the middle of I-95.

Telegraph Road currently allows access between Route 1 and the area around the Russell-Knox Building on the west side of Marine Corps Base Quantico. During the closure, detour signs will be posted, guiding motorists to Russell Road, which passes under the highway a little more than a mile north of Telegraph Road.

However, a number of overnight closures are expected on Russell Road during the month of March. The closures, which will allow for a HOT lanes bridge to be installed on I-95 over Russell Road, will be between the I-95 Southbound off ramp and the I-95 northbound on ramp from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., March 22 and 23. On March 24, it will close from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., said Joe Winterer, community and transportation planner with the Public Works Branch.

During those nights, detour signs will guide drivers.

The HOT lanes project is adding an additional high-occupancy vehicle lane between Edsall Road on I-395 and the Prince William Parkway on I-95, and extending two lanes from there south to Garrisonville Road. The toll that drivers will pay for access to the lanes will vary depending on traffic volumes. The lanes are expected to be completed by December 2014.
