Voluntary Protection Program kicks off

On Nov. 5 representatives from Marine Corps Base Quantico signed a charter committing the base to a workplace safety improvement effort known as the Voluntary Protection Program. James Whitaker, a safety specialist with Base Safety Division, made opening remarks and said that VPP will be incorporated into current work practices to improve communication and safety for all employees.

Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff visits Quantico

Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. James Winnefeld Jr. visited Marine Corps Base Quantico on Nov. 4 to view Infantry Officer Course training. Formerly the commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command–U.S. Northern Command, Winnefeld is in his second two-year term as vice chairman and the second-highest-ranking officer in the Department of Defense.

Four Marines among those receiving citizenship

Four Marines were among the group of 26 candidates from 20 different countries to officially become American citizens during Monday’s naturalization ceremony at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Leon Rodriguez, the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, administered the Oath of Allegiance and presented each of the candidates for naturalization before a large crowd of family and friends.

Marines and sailors now eligible for Enlisted-to-Medical-Degree Preparatory Program

A medical school preparatory program that has been open for several years to enlisted Air Force and Army personnel is now also open to enlisted Marines and sailors. According to a statement by Uniformed Services University of Health Services, the two-year program, known as EMDP2, is open to service members who already have a bachelor’s degree and maintained at least a 3.2 GPA while in school. Candidates will remain on active duty while attending school full-time, though since the program is based at George Mason University-Prince William Campus in Manassas, they will attend classes in civilian attire. They will take pre-medical school classes, such as biology and chemistry, as well as Medical College Admission Test preparatory classes. Students will also receive pre-medical school mentoring and have the opportunity for exposure to clinical settings.

MCBQ hosts 4th Annual Quantico Shooting Match

Hitting a target with three different weapons can be trying enough, but doing so while moving and reloading makes the task that much more difficult. That’s what the 140 Marines from up and down the East Coast and select civilian and federal law enforcement officers had in mind as they gathered aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico from Oct. 27-30 to test their skills against one another in the 4th Annual Quantico Shooting Match.

Educational opportunities for civilian employees aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico

There are numerous educational opportunities for service members aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, and contrary to popular belief, many of them are available to civilian employees as well. The Voluntary Education Center, located at 3088 Roan Street on base, is the office that coordinates educational activities not considered Professional Military Education or professional development.

Korean War vet honored at National Museum of the Marine Corps

The 83-year-old Marine Korean War veteran was at a loss for words after his family honored him with a memorable experience at the National Museum of the Marine Corps as a moving tribute to his military service, love of family and lasting impact on their own lives. Sgt. Major Justin D. Lehew, sergeant major, Training and Education command, greeted Curcio prior to a guided tour of the museum and shared lunch afterwards at the nearby Globe and Laurel restaurant with the entire Curcio family.
