The summer reading program kicked off at the Marine Corps Base Quantico base library on Monday with a special story hour for young children and their parents. The theme for this year’s program is “Read to the Rhythm,” and according to head librarian Richard Freeman, the program is the same at all military base libraries throughout the Department of Defense. “It helps maintain continuity during the summer transition,” said Freeman.

Readers of all ages – toddler through adult – are eligible to participate in the summer reading program for the chance to win prizes. In keeping with the theme this year, the prizes are all musically themed and include books, t-shirts, keychains, Frisbees and stuffed animals, among others.

Freeman said even younger children who can’t read can participate by having their parents or siblings read to them. Children ages 0-12 earn a prize for every 90 minutes they read, or have someone read to them, and teens and adults earn prizes for every two books they read.

The program runs from June 22 through July 31, and there will be story hours Monday through Thursday, with a movie day on Friday. “We want people to enjoy reading,” said Freedom.

Readers can sign up to participate online and record their reading hours or books read at http://guides.grc.usmcu.edu/quantico-summer.
