There’s no better way to fend the winter blues than to prepare for summertime activity. The Quantico Tri, opened Wednesday for online registration, is introducing a new open-water swim as part of this year’s event that will be held Aug. 22 on Marine Corps Base Quantico. In celebration of this open-water event the Tri will provide seaweed in post-event hospitality and also, for the first time, present finisher medals.

"The Quantico Tri and its new open-water swim in the Potomac will make for an exhilarating event," says Rick Nealis, MCM director. "Athletes will be ecstatic to receive a finisher medal while munching on seaweed."

According to health experts, just a gram of seaweed can provide a daily dose of iodine, important for healthy thyroid function. In addition, seaweed can help the body metabolize fats for energy, is rich in calcium and protein and includes vitamin B-12 and vitamin A.

Online registration for the Quantico Tri opened at noon, Wednesday at www.marinemarathon.com.

In addition to the open-water swim, the sprint event will include a 12.4-mile bike ride and 5K run. The swim portion will be held in the waters of the Potomac, located near the Marine Corps’ Officer Candidate School. Over the past two years, the swim has been held in the Quantico pool.

Registration for the Quantico Tri is $95 and includes a pre-event pasta dinner and guest speaker at the Clubs of Quantico. Participants also will receive a moisture-wicking technical shirt, official bib, timing device, helmet sticker, bike number, competitor tattoo and a Quantico Tri swim cap.

The USA Triathlon-certified Quantico Tri is part of the MCM Event Series, hosted annually by the Marine Corps Marathon.
