Marine Corps Base Quantico --
October is Domestic Violence Prevention Awareness Month and Marine Corps Base Quantico’s Family Advocacy Program has a lineup of programs designed to increase awareness of domestic violence prevention programs as well as speakers who will offer insight into the root causes of domestic violence as well as how the medical community is evolving to treat victims with more care and understanding.
Through Oct. 15 – Wear Purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Email photos to our Prevention and Education Specialist at childressrl@usmc-mccs.org to be added to our Facebook page. Great opportunity for families and offices to show their support.
Friday, noon at Little Hall: Book Discussion “Black and Blue” by Anna Quindlen. This powerfully written book tells the story of Fran and her abusive relationship. The importance of honesty and self-knowledge as an essential part of healing is a major theme. Excellent book that will prove for a meaningful discussion for service providers, leaders, survivors of domestic violence and concerned community members. All are welcome.
Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Clubs at Quantico’s Waller Room: Married and Loving It! The one-day “Married and Loving It!” workshop is a research-based educational workshop for couples who want to improve communication, set guidelines for establishing a sound financial future, identify anger and how to solve conflict in healthy ways, set healthy boundaries with in-laws and other extended family members, and discuss other factors that help couple truly enjoy married life. A great outreach event for couples that are dating, engaged, newly married or couples who have been married for years but are just interested in a day of learning and sharing with other couples. Pre-registration encouraged.
Oct. 22 at 10 a.m., at Little Hall CR2: Guest speaker Allie Phillips, director of the National District Attorneys Association, and deputy director of the National Center for Prosecution of Animal Abuse of the National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse, will discuss the connection between animal abuse and family violence.
Oct. 29 at 8:30 a.m. at Little Hall: Healthcare partnerships and guest speakers from Empower House and Mary Washington Hospital will discuss healthcare partnerships and the critical role of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner practitioners. SANE nurses strive to preserve their patients’ dignity and ensure that survivors are not re-traumatized by the evidence-collection process. They help survivors gain control by allowing them to make decision throughout the process. Excellent training for service providers, base and unit Sexual Assault Response Coordinators, law enforcement, and base leadership.
