Home Preparation

• Residents are encouraged to review household emergency supplies and ensure adequate food, water, medications, and heating resources are available.
• Take steps to prevent cold-related damage, including protecting exposed pipes and ensuring heating systems are operating safely.
• Use caution with alternative heating sources and ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly.
• Check on family members, neighbors, or others who may require additional assistance during severe weather conditions.

Emergency Supplies

• Maintain sufficient supplies to support household members for several days without outside assistance.
• Recommended items include non-perishable food, drinking water, flashlights, batteries, radios, and essential medical items.
• Ensure electronic devices can be charged using portable or vehicle-based charging options if power outages occur.
• Review family emergency plans and ensure all household members understand response procedures.

Travel Guidance

• Travel during severe winter weather is discouraged unless mission essential or otherwise necessary.
• If travel is required, allow additional time, monitor road conditions, and follow all traffic and emergency guidance.
• Vehicles should be properly fueled and equipped for winter conditions prior to departure.
• In the event of becoming stranded, remain with your vehicle and await assistance.

Personal Safety

• Limit time outdoors during periods of extreme cold and ensure appropriate cold-weather clothing is worn when exposure is unavoidable.
• Be aware of the risks associated with carbon monoxide and never operate generators, grills, or fuel-burning devices indoors or in enclosed spaces.
• Ensure garages are ventilated and never leave vehicles running in enclosed or partially enclosed areas.
• Follow all safety guidance related to heating, power use, and emergency equipment.
