Marines flock to ‘American Sniper’ showing

Maj. Jeffrey Pelt had a little more in mind on March 4 than just taking a break from the day to see the story of one of the most storied snipers in American military annals. Pelt, who commands Bravo Company at The Basic School, hoped that watching “American Sniper” at the Little Hall Theater would help better educate the 238 second lieutenants in his command in combat tactics. The students begin field events this week focusing on squad tactics, and Pelt felt the Clint Eastwood-directed story of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle could help.

Museum’s Vietnam focus

Isaac Both didn’t know all that much about the Vietnam War, so he attended Friday’s “Vietnam History Day” festivities at the National Museum of the Marine Corps to learn more about the conflict from those who were actually there. The 19-year-old Germanna Community College student came away impressed after touring the museum’s Vietnam War gallery and taking in an informative lecture by retired Marine Corps Maj. Bill Peters.

Late-season snow gives way to sunshine, rising temperatures

In what many local residents are hoping was winter’s last, dying gasp, a storm blanketed the region with snow March 5, closing the base, and schools and businesses in the surrounding counties. Marine Corps Air Facility Quantico’s Weather Services staff recorded 3.5 inches of snow aboard the base, while locations around Prince William County recorded between 4.8 and 7.3 inches, and Stafford County recorded 4.5-5.5 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

There was no west side to conduct combat training at Marine Corps Base Quantico 100 years ago, let alone an array of schools and child care centers to worry about. But since the base’s founding in 1917, the vestiges of those days gone by continue to keep David P. Wolfe busy. As the explosive safety officer for National Capital Region/MCBQ, it’s his job to help facilitate the removal of any unexploded ordnance that might be still be lying around on the former training sites mostly located on the base main side.

On April 13 Marine Corps Base Quantico’s 665 elementary school students, who currently attend three separate schools, will step through the doors of their new school, Crossroads Elementary. Prior to the opening, the elementary students, as well as the middle/high school students, will enjoy an expanded two-week spring break, while contractors and the school maintenance team move all the furniture and supplies from the old schools into the new one.

Outdoor enthusiasts, including runners, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders and residents walking their dogs, are advised to stay on the designated pathways of the mainside trail network and not to venture off the trails or forge new ones of their own. Portions of the trail network fall within historical range fans, and trail users are more likely to encounter unexploded ordnance and other debris off-trail than on the well-worn pathways, said Restoration Program Manager Brian Ventura.

Naval Health Clinic Quantico helps promote dental hygiene awareness

Dental disease is the most prevalent of unmet healthcare needs, and a harbinger of bigger troubles ahead if left unchecked. The goal of February’s National Children’s Dental Health Awareness Month was to provide children more understanding about the importance of lifelong oral health. The community outreach program, which was the idea of the American Dental Association, was initiated at the Naval Health Clinic Quantico last year, followed by last month’s appearances before 661 school-aged children aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico.
