Comments sought at public open house

10 Apr 2008 |

The U.S. Air Force is seeking public comments on the Remedial Investigation Report, Feasibility Study and Proposed Plan for Site SS-12, the former Golf Course Maintenance/Entomology Shop at Scott Air Force Base. The RI Report discusses the risks posed by the site, and the FS presents an evaluation of soil cleanup options. The Proposed Plan identifies preferred cleanup alternatives for soil, along with the other options considered. The RI Report, FS and Proposed Plan were submitted for review to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency who communicated to the USAF their concurrence with the documents.

The USAF evaluated the following options for addressing contaminated soil at the site:

· No action
· Limited action (institutional controls)

These alternatives are described in the FS and Proposed Plan. Copies of the RI Report, FS and Proposed Plan are available from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, beginning Saturday at the Southwestern Illinois College Public Library, 2500 Carlyle Avenue, Belleville, Ill., and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday on Scott at AMC/A7VR, 507 Symington Drive.

Based on available information, the Preferred Alternative for soil is to implement institutional controls to restrict future land use. Although this is currently the Preferred Alternative, the USAF and Illinois EPA welcome the public's comments on all alternatives listed above. Oral and written comments may be submitted between Saturday and May 3.

Before selecting the final remedy, the USAF will consider and respond to these comments. Written comments may be mailed to Mr. Richard G. Burnette, HQ AMC/A7PL, 507 Symington Drive, Scott AFB, Ill., 62225-5022 or at (813) 293-2998. Comments must be postmarked no later than May 3, 2008. Oral and written comments may also be submitted at the public meeting held April 17, 2008, at 7 p.m. at the Scott VFW Post 4183, 1516 Old Highway 158, Belleville, Ill.

All comments will be reviewed by both the USAF and Illinois EPA.
