Commuters eligible for Guaranteed Ride Home Program

The Guaranteed Ride Home program is now an available for option commuters who find themselves unexpectedly in need of a ride home. Those who carpool, vanpool, bike, walk or take transit at least twice per week in the metro Washington, D.C., or Baltimore areas can take advantage of a program sponsored by the Northern Virginia Regional Commission that would provide a free lift for as many as four times per year in the event of a personal or family illness, unscheduled overtime or any other unexpected emergency.

Methods of Entry School students face ultimate tests before graduation

Nothing in his background of close quarters combat prepared Cpl. Tyler Zeller for the challenging test assignment given him during his final week as a student at the Methods of Entry School. Armed with limited initial information, Zeller took his turn serving as the Lead Breacher for a Marine team charged with violently breaching the door of a house where armed suspected Afghan insurgents held captives while planning attacks against American service members. Zeller had just 90 minutes to assess the simulated mission, assign specific tasks to his eight-man team and rehearse before executing the mission.

Marine Corps civilian police officer recognized for valor by Prince William County Chamber of Commerce

Officer John Covey, of the Marine Corps Base Quantico Provost Marshal Office, was recognized for valor in a ceremony at the Hylton Performing Arts Center on March 18. Covey received a bronze medal for valor from the Prince William County Chamber of Commerce. Twenty other officers from throughout Prince William County were also recognized for various lifesaving acts and exceptional investigative skills that protected the community from dangerous criminals.

Milford Mill Academy’s Marine Corps Junior ROTC unit visits Quantico

On March 12 Marine Corps Base Quantico hosted the Marine Corps junior ROTC unit from Milford Mill Academy in Baltimore for a day filled with military experiences not available in their community. Led by retired Gunnery Sergeant Samyra Rogers and escorted by Cpl. Turnell Robbins, from Marine Helicopter Squadron One, the group started the day with breakfast at Bruce Hall. The students then boarded the bus to head over to Camp Upshur. While waiting to begin training, the group’s unarmed drill platoon got in some practice drills, with Cadet Captain Deborah Ogun, 18, leading the way. Ogun and her team will compete in a regional drill championship on March 28 against 13 other teams.
