The PME included discussion of various topics including financial readiness, suicide prevention and substance abuse. During the holiday season many servicemembers all around the world celebrate and leaders encourage them to do so safely. Sgt. Maj. Gerald A. Saunders Jr., base sergeant major, spoke to Marines about responsible drinking as part of National Drunk and Drugged Driving prevention month, which raised awareness about alcohol and drug abuse in the military. From the Marine Corps Marathon to standing duty during the Thanksgiving holiday, Marines have invested many hours, which contribute to effective base operations. Their volunteer work will continue though the holiday season. “A lot of you may not think we recognize your contributions to the success of the base,” said Saunders to the group of Marines, many of whom make up the Single Marine Program. “We greatly appreciate your commitment to our base activities and unit readiness,” said Saunders in reference to the many hours of work and dedication given by the Marines. “Thank you and I appreciate the hard work you put in this year. Keep up the good work.” Marine Corps Community Service Single Marine Program hosted the event featuring games, caroling and food provided by First Command Financial. Marines participated in an elf costume and ugly holiday sweater competition for a chance to win gift cards and door prizes. The MCCS SMP is doing a “wonderful job” working with the Marines on base. Whether it’s a bike ride rental on the weekend or a trip outside of Quantico, Marines have a lot of opportunities to create great memories while stationed here, said Col. Joseph Murray, base commander. “With all the good things you are doing, there are other things you can do. What are your ideas?” said Murray. “How are you going get your juices flowing in your individual units?”Murray challenged the Marines to be motivated within their individual units, and in the upcoming year communicate their ideas for improving their sections to their leaders. — Writer: iirby@quanticosentryonline.com Tags Marine Corps Base Quantico , base commander’s annual Christmas Troop Appreciation , Troop Appreciation , Marine Corps Community Service Single Marine Program
