Department of Defense vehicle decals: are they required or not?

With recent news reports of the publication of personal information about American service members by ISIS, the conversation about Department of Defense vehicle decals has revived. However, the requirements are unclear to many people aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, with some believing the stickers are required, and others stating that they are not.

The answer for those who work aboard Marine Corps bases is that the stickers are still required — for now. According to Reyes Gonzalez, services officer for the MCBQ Provost Marshal’s Office, all base residents and employees must register their car and place the DOD decals on the windshield.

However, according to Rex Runyon, the public affairs officer for Marine Corps Installations Command, “Marine Corps officials are reviewing current USMC base decal policy, which is working its way through the staffing process at Headquarters. With this and all related security issues, the safety and well-being of our service members and their families remain our highest priority.”

Of all military branches, the Marine Corps is the sole hold-out in terms of requiring vehicle decals for installation access, though the decals are not the sole requirement. Identification cards are checked for at least the driver of every vehicle entering a Marine Corps base. The Air Force eliminated the requirement for decals in 2007, the Army in 2011 and the Navy in 2013. These three services rely solely on military ID cards to determine access eligibility for drivers.
