Free tax services available

The Marine Corps Base Quantico Tax Center opened in the back of Legal Assistance building, at 3095 Roan Street on Jan. 28, 2014.

The tax center will be running on a walk-in basis through April 15, 2014, and is offering services to active duty military, their dependents and retirees.

“This is a free service so you will get as much back as possible,” said 1st Lt. Rory Gates, the assistant officer in charge for the Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Individual Tax Assistance.

Marines at the tax center are trained and educated in the tax law and are certified by the IRS.

“The Marines here have taken a weeklong course and have been here for an extra three weeks getting prepared,” said Gates. “They are certified at a high level.”

Required documentation for filing includes social security card for all parties who will be claimed, and all income statements. For those who file electronically, a bank routing and checking account number is also required.

“We have all the paperwork here,” said Staff Sgt. Abel Sanchez, a quality reviewer for the IRS VITA. “The initial paper is like an interview and will take less than 10 minutes to fill out. It can take up to one hour to file your taxes, and that’s including a review by a staff noncommissioned officer.”

A Pre-Filing Checklist and the Client Intake Form can be found online, as well as an eligibility list and a list with your required documents.

On Mondays and Wednesdays the center will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will also be a second location available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at The Basic School in Cox Hall.

“The wait time will be shorter the sooner in the season you come,” said Gates.” We also give priority to service members who are E-5 and below and in uniform. We understand how important it is to get back to work.”

Electronic and paper filings are both available. An electronic refund can arrive within a week while a paper file will take about six to eight weeks to arrive.

“It’s highly encouraged to file electronically, however, it is not always possible,” said Gates.

After April 15, 2014, the tax center will only accept appointments, and will be done by Legal Assistance.

The Pre-Filing Checklist and Client Intake Form can be found at the Legal and Tax Services section.
