Weapons Training Battalion now offers recreational range time

Military members and their dependents, along with civilian employees of the base, now have the opportunity to participate in recreational shooting on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Weapons Training Battalion ranges aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Chief Warrant Officer 4 Martin Dankanich, Range Officer for WTBN, said everyone with base access is welcome to participate, but dependents must be at least 12 years old.

The eerie quiet of the pitch dark had given way to the deafening sounds of explosives when the first cries for help could be heard at the Goettge Demolition Range. It wasn’t real, but the Marines poised to graduate from the Methods of Entry School the following day were pretending as much during the school’s annual Emergency Response Exercise on the night of Dec. 18. Designed to prepare for any number of worst-case scenarios following a violent door breach, the simulation showcased emergency procedures in the event of any blast-related injuries such as amputation, shock, puncture wounds and extreme blood loss.

The Commuter Express shuttle will begin transporting Virginia Railway Express riders from the train station in Quantico to various commands and work places on the west side of Quantico, starting on Jan. 5, said B. Mark Vesely, chief accident reconstructionist for PMO’s Accident Investigation Unit. In response to mass shootings at schools and other locations, including at the Washington Navy Yard in September 2013, various units aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico have routinely conducted both lecture-style training and active-shooter drills with role players. The most recent active shooter drill aboard the base was conducted at the Raymond G. Davis Center on Dec. 16.
