NHCQ changes non-formulary medication process

15 Jan 2015 | Heidi Linscott Marine Corps Base Quantico

The National Capital Region announced changes to its non-formulary medication process as of Jan. 1.

The Naval Health Center Quantico maintains a list of medications that is referred to as the “Quantico Formulary.” These pharmaceuticals are available to all eligible beneficiaries irrespective of their category or status. All formulary drugs will be dispensed as generics unless unavailable. Quantity restrictions apply to all prescriptions and refills are not authorized for controlled substances. The medications listed on the Formulary were determined appropriate by the Department of Defense Pharmaco-Economic Center, and approved by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs and Naval Health Clinic Quantico’s Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

NCR will no longer fill non-formulary medications from outside primary care providers.

Patients referred for specialty care outside of the Military Treatment Facility will be authorized to receive NF medications. This does not affect refills for the NF medication. MTF providers will be required to submit a NF drug request every time a new prescription is ordered. Once the NF prescription is sent to the pharmacy to be filled it will take 3-5 working days from the time the order is submitted for patients to receive their medications.

To assist our patients, Naval Health Clinic Quantico will continue to process all medications until Feb. 1. It is recommended that patients who are currently taking NF medications see a MTF provider or switch to a formulary alternative.

Patients can also use the TRICARE Mail Order Pharmacy, keeping in mind that there may be copay for the NF medications.
