This graphic illustration features U.S. Marine Corps veteran Cpl. Donald Raasch, created on Feb. 27, 2024. Raasch served during World War II, where he fought on Iwo Jima for 14 days until he was injured by a mortar shell explosion, earning a Purple Heart for his service. Nearing 100 years in age, he is one of the few men who can retell his experience battling on the black sands of Iwo Jima. This graphic was created using Adobe Illustrator.
