More than 60 Marines and DoD civilians were recognized for their volunteer efforts on behalf of the communities surrounding Marine Corps Base Quantico at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at The Clubs at Quantico April 21.

“We appreciate that you take the time to volunteer for our community, whether inside or outside these gates, whether you have a pet project or are ‘generalists,’” Col. Allen Broughton, MCBQ chief of staff, told the assembled guests.

“For some of the Marines here, you may initially have been ‘voluntold,’” he continued. “But I hope you’ve enjoyed it and that the value of serving your community is a lesson you’ll share with younger Marines.”

Many of the volunteers were Marines and civilians from Marine Corps Systems Command and Marine Corps Air Facility Quantico. The volunteers donated their time to helping organizations on base, such as the Marine Corps Marathon and the Single Marine Program, and off base, such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Team Red, White & Blue.

Joyce Murphy, family readiness programs manager for Marine Corps Community Services, said that more than 700 members of the Quantico community are registered as volunteers on the MCCS online portal. She thanked the MCBQ community relations office for its work facilitating volunteer opportunities for active duty Marines.

“I look forward to seeing you here next year,” Broughton said. “Please continue what you’re doing. And even though I know you don’t do it for recognition, make sure that the leadership recognizes it.”
