Marine Corps Base Quantico -- Brig. Gen. Paul Kennedy will assume command of Marine Corps Recruiting Command, Marine Corps Base Quantico, from current commander Lt. Gen. Mark Andrew Brilakis today during a change of command ceremony being held at Gray Research Center’s auditorium at 10 a.m.
Kennedy comes from Okinawa, Japan, where he was the deputy commanding general, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force and commanding general of 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Boston University. In 2001 Kennedy earned his master’s degree in military science from Marine Corps University and in 2006 he received a master’s of arts in national security strategy from the National War College. Other education includes The Basic School, the Infantry Officer’s Course, the Amphibious Warfare School and the School of Advanced Warfighting.
During his service, Kennedy participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he was assigned to the city of Ramadi, Iraq. From July 2008 to July 2011 he commanded 2nd Marine Regiment, which deployed Regimental Combat Team 2 to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 10.1 and 10.2
Outgoing commander Brilakis, in addition to commanding Marine Corps Recruiting Command, is the deputy commandant for Manpower and Reserve Affairs.
His military education includes the Amphibious Warfare School; Command and Staff College; School of Advanced Warfighting; and CMC Fellow, Center for Strategic and International Studies. He holds a master’s degree in military studies from Marine Corps University.
His experience includes assignments in the Operating Forces as battery officer, 1st Battalion, 10th Marines; battery commander, Battalion FDO, and S-3, Supporting Arms Coordinator, Amphibious Group Two, Future Operations and MAGTF Planner, G-3, II MEF; executive officer, 10th Marine Regiment; commanding officer 1st Battalion, 10th Marines, commanding general, 3d Marine Expeditionary Force and commanding general, 3d Marine Division. He has also held numerous assignments in support and headquarters staff. He has been commander of recruiting since July 12, 2013.
