MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. -- The Quantico Intramural Basketball 2014 3-Point Challenge and All-Star game took place April 7, 2014, at the Barber Physical Activity Center. The National League team held off the American League to win, 51-42.
Before the All-Star game started, there was a 3-point challenge where players from each league signed up to take 15 shots from beyond the 3-point line. After more than 20 contestants tried their hand at the competition, the final scores were taken and a winner was announced.
Tyler Szarenski, a player for the Marine Corps University team of the National League, won the event with 17 points beating three other players who tied for second with 16 points.
Following the presentation of the trophies, the All-Star teams tipped off and the American League got off to a quick start, scoring the first two points in less than 10 seconds. But after the initial basket, the National League went on a shooting spree, scoring nine unanswered points.
For the rest of the game, the American League could not get closer than six points to the National League, which led to a final score of 51-42.
The most valuable player for the National League was Nardarius Durr, originally with the Headquarters and Service Battalion finance team, who ended the game with 17 points.
“We didn’t really know each other out there,” said Durr. “But even without that chemistry, we still played well and came out with a win.”
The players for the each team were selected by the coaches of the leagues.
“The top two teams in each league were given two slots to fill,” said Bobby Brown, the athletic director for the Barber Physical Activity Center. “All of the other teams were only able to send one player.”
The only thing left this season is the championship tournament where the top four teams from each league have been selected for a double elimination playoff tournament.
The semifinals conclude tonight with a game beginning at 6 p.m. at the Barber Physical Activity Center, which will determine the two teams that will play in the championship game.
The championship game will follow at 7 p.m.
