Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va. -- The Quantico Middle/High School Warriors basketball team fought hard at a home game against the Colonels of Massanutten Military Academy from Woodstock. The Warriors’ defense never let up on the Colonels, but couldn’t make the win, losing 59-52.
Both defenses were relentless and kept the score incredibly low. The quarter ended 14-11 with the lead in the hands of the Colonels.
The second quarter was little different from the first as the both teams held the other to low scores again, finishing the half with the Colonels still in the lead, 30-21.
At the start of the second half, both teams defenses allowed a few more points than in the first game. Both teams scored the most points in that quarter than they had all game. The quarter ended with Quantico down, 45-34.
At the beginning of the final quarter, Quantico seemed to be headed down hill. No shots landed for the first three minutes while Massanutten pulled away to what seemed like an easy victory. But Quantico was not going to lie down and take this loss.
The Warriors came back and seemed to run over the Colonels’ defense for a few minutes scoring 12 rapid-fire points. It looked like they would come back to win, bringing the score within two points with a little over a minute left in the game. But, try as they might, the Colonels’ held on to win 59-52.
“Our boys tried hard tonight, that’s for sure,” said Eddie Cottrell, the Quantico Middle/High School head basketball coach. “It’s tough watching these guys fight back like that and end up not quite making it. But, as a coach, I am proud to see that they never gave up and fought to the end.”
The Warriors last regular season home game was Tuesday. They have a playoff schedule that will be announced on Friday.
