MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. -- Frustration and disappointment molded the faces of the QMHS Lady Warriors varsity basketball team into lowered eyebrows and sullen stares as they watched the Fredericksburg Academy Falcons clinch the win 39-18 on Dec. 11, 2013.
Playing the third game of the regular season, the Warriors struggled to make their shots count, resulting in the devastating loss, while the Falcons dominated by controlling many aspects of the game.
“We were better on the boards tonight,” said Jarod Fox, head coach Fredericksburg Academy girls varsity basketball team. “We have been working on ball movement and the girls are catching on and rebounding [well].”
Paul Roy, the Warriors’ head coach, agreed.
“They played a very good defense and they hustled,” said Roy. “Our shots didn’t fall tonight. Can’t win a ball game without shots and free throws going in.”
Although the offense dropped the ball, the defense presented an immediate and consistent threat to the Falcons, especially early in the game, holding the team to fewer than 40 points.
“[They gave us a] good fight and [had] good resilience,” said Fox. “[They’re a] good squad. They’re learning, as we are, too.”
Although Quantico will be continuing to work to improve their game, Jakeria, a senior, said she enjoys playing with the Warriors.
“I like being part of this team because of my teammates,” said Jakeria. “We work well together. [And, although] we put our heart in it, we just didn’t get there [tonight].”
The Warriors will meet the Falcons again on Jan. 29, but have half a dozen games to refine their technique before the next faceoff.
Until then, the Warriors will continue to fight through their season, playing the Holy Family Academy from Manassas next at 4:30 p.m., on Jan. 8, 2014.
